Roseneath School of Music Concert 2011 Review

August 28, 2011 By Paul Cunningham

Once again the Roseneath School of Music was enabled by the Concertante Society along with the Bartlett Taylor Trust to showcase the talents of local young musicians at a concert in the Tiddy Hall, Ascott-Under-Wychwood.

On this occasion, the Concertante Society paid tribute to its patron, Dorothy Lavelle who had passed away at the age of 96. She had been a great mentor, friend and advisor to everyone involved in this and previous concerts and her memory will live on through the presentation of the Lavelle Cup each year.

This year’s selection of music and instruments may, conceivably, be the most diverse since these concerts began. Emma Jensen-Bowerman played the cello, and there were pieces for oboe (Beth Fraser), flute (Rebecca Woods and Charlotte Taylor), guitar (Venetia and Mercedes Hobkirk-Capps), cornet (Mark Milner) and trumpet (Rhys Long and Luke Garbutt). Ellen and Evie Garbutt both sang.

Several special guests made unique contributions to the evening’s entertainment, including the band ‘Stuck on Repeat’ who played numbers by Lady Gaga and Jessie J. Harriet Taylor (clarinet) played the well-known Shepherd’s Hey by Percy Grainger and Beth Fraser (oboe) played a Siciliana.

Edward Baldwin who once studied with the Roseneath School of Music returned not only with the waltz in A♭ for piano by Chopin but also the Concerto for Alto Saxophone by Ronald Binge. Accompanied by his tutor, Michael Liddell, on piano, Edward’s performance was quite remarkable. Michael, himself, then went on to give a scintillating performance of Chopin’s Ballade no. 3 in A♭ op.47.

Jordan Eriksen ended the evening with a reflective performance of ‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay.
